The flute is the highest sounding instrument in the band, and is the only woodwind instrument without a reed. It is played by blowing across the opening on one end, and notes are changed by pushing down different key combinations.
The oboe is a high pitched double reed instrument. Producing a very distinct sound, the oboe is often featured as a solo instrument in music. The instrument is played by blowing through the reed and using the keys to change notes. A special instrument in the band, only a few students are selected to play oboe each year.
The bassoon is a low pitched double reed instrument. Like the oboe, the bassoon has a very unique sound, and only a few students are selected to play it each year. The bassoon has the most keys out of all the woodwind instruments which makes it the most challenging, but rewarding, instrument.
The clarinet uses a single reed that vibrates against the mouthpiece when air is blown into it. The clarinet is made of wood and has keys that change notes.
The saxophone is a popular instrument choice in the band. Even though it is made of brass, the saxophone is still considered a woodwind instrument. After completing beginning band, students will have the opportunity to switch to the lower sounding saxophones: tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone.
The trumpet is the highest sounding instrument in the brass family. Different from the woodwind instruments, the sound on a brass instrument is produced by vibrating the lips into the mouthpiece. The trumpet is a melody instrument and is often chosen for solos in band music.
The french horn is another high brass instrument. Commonly featured in movie soundtracks, the french horn has a very distinct, mellow sound. Students that have a good musical ear tend to be more successful on this instrument.
The trombone is the most unique instrument in the band because of its long slide that is moved in and out to change notes. The more popular instrument of the low brass section, the trombone is often used as a low pitched solo instrument.
The euphonium, often called the baritone, is another member of the low brass family. While it looks like a miniature tuba, the euphonium sounds more similar to the trombone. The euphonium has a very rich and warm sound which allows it to either blend with the band or excel as a solo instrument.
The tuba is the lowest sounding and the most important instrument in the band. While the tuba is quite large, do not let its size stop you from playing this beautiful instrument. In 6th grade, students will receive a smaller sized tuba meant for younger players. You will also receive one instrument for home and one instrument for school!
Percussion is the rhythmic section of the band. While "drums" are an integral part of percussion, we learn many different instruments including marimba, bass drum, timpani, tambourine, etc. Because percussion is the most popular choice among beginning band students, enrollment in this course is limited.
Frequently Asked Questions
I don't know anything about music. Can I still join?
Absolutely!!! Most students who join band have zero prior knowledge of music.
What instruments do I have to choose, and how to I choose one?
We have 12 different instruments that you can choose from to play. Scroll up to read a short description of each instrument and hear a short demonstration.
Woodwinds: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone
Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
Percussion: Includes Mallet keyboards, Snare drum, Bass drum, Timpani, Cymbals, and More!!
I'm thinking of doing sports in 7th grade. Can I participate in both band and sports?
Yes, you absolutely can! In fact, we share a lot of students between band, football, volleyball, basketball, track, and even choir and orchestra! The band directors work with the coaches throughout the year so that students can participate in multiple activities.
Are there any school owned instruments available?
Humble ISD provides a school owned instrument for the more expensive instruments. These include the Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn, Euphonium, and Tuba. If you are in financial hardship and need any assistance, please reach out the band directors! It is our belief that money should not be a reason that a student cannot participate in band.
